Hank & Maraya

I used to think it was the air that was special here. If it were up to these two, the city would have most likely been called Buenas Luzes instead of Buenos Aires.

Hank is a professional photographer. Having worked for National Geographic, The Discovery Channel, PBS and The Travel Channel, his *girlfriend had to have picked up the shutter bug along the way right?

*correction: I just found out that Hank & Maraya are not partners. My mistake, sorry.

Actually, she is an artist in her own right as well. She received her BFA in art education from the University of Calgary in 1989. She is also a published poet and this couple is currently having their work in photographs displayed at the Edea Art Gallery in San Telmo. The collection is called "The Light is Special Here" and it is a collection of photoshop free highlights of their travels through Argentina and Central America.

The show has already started and it runs from the 14th through the 24th. On the 24th between 4:30 and 6:30pm Hank and Maraya will treat their guests to some Sugar & Spice cookies so you can satisfy any cookie craving you might have while admiring their handy camera work.

Just to give you a taste of what you can see at the show I have included some pictures below, as well as the picture above. You can click on them to get a much larger view:

I think Buenas Luzes might just be more accurate than Buenos Aires, even though the weather here is pretty phenomenal all year. Thanks for sharing this information. The photos are beautiful! There are so many shows during the Festival de Luz that it's sometimes hard to choose.

Another one worth seeing is Chris Rauschenberg's work at Teatro San Martin. Teatro San Martin consistently has some the best photo exhibits in town.

Thanks again!

Sheesh talk about nepotism among the expats down here. When we talk about photography - is it possible to present a gallery show to the world with photos taken on an 'instamatic'. There is more to photography than an eye as those of us who spend $ and labour to capture 'light' properly will attest

Hi Tracy,

Wow, you think I am someone with power around here? Also, I am not remotely related to Hank or Maraya so why would I even write about them?

They asked me. They sent me their pictures, and they wanted to have my cookies in their show on Sunday.

I get approached by many businesses and people. I can´t even mention all the places that I do business with because I don´t have the time, much less try to mention events that have no ties with me.

Being an expat myself, I do know a great many of them and I do try to get around.

Tracy, I take it you are a photographer. If you ever have a show and you would like me to mention you just let me know. I am willing to talk and most important, listen to what you have to say and you don´t even have to be related to me so no one can really label this nepotism.

Beautiful photos. I would love to go to the event and taste some of those cookies! Too bad I won't be in Buenos Aires but in plain, old, boring (but kind of cute) Chicago.

Angela,

Thanks for the nice comments and for the added suggestion!

Laurie,

Boring(but kind of cute)Chicago? I love that place. Whenever I go back I find that I run out of time and can never fit all the things I want to into our trip. The kids love it so much they pretty much have adopted it as their second home town. They always ask me, whenever we visit, why we can´t live there, then at the end of their trip they do start to miss their home.

I know, we all do start taking our immediate surroundings for granted. Believe me, I used to live there. Oh, how I appreciate all the clean parks, the variety of food, clean streets, lots of greenery throughout the city, mild mannered driving (compared to Buenos Aires--believe me), hot dogs,... nope I am going back to food that doesn´t count. Anyway, before I go on and on I am sure you get my drift.

I also love my new home, but being away from Chicago has made me appreciate it even more.
